vSphere: Enabling SSH users without Console Access

I had a bit of a perdicament yesterday with my network, so I wanted to do some ping tests, but I had forgotten to enable root SSH access when I first did the installs. Luckily Veeam’s RootAccess software saved my day.

The software is freely available, but registration requires a non-free email address such as your work addy.

Once opening up the Configurator, you’re prompted for your default credentials, in my lab they are all the same, so this works out.

After you’re done with that, you’re at the main window where you’ll need to add your servers.

Now that we have one of our servers connected, we can add a new user. Thinking that VMware had a reason for doing this to begin with, I’ll keep in best practice in adding a new user and not giving it root access, instead we can use su - if need be.

Now we’re all done, you can logon to the ESX server via SSH with that username and password.
